Do Dell laser printers have smart chips that cause the cartridge to expire before the toner runs out?
Yes, the newer laser printer toner cartridge has a smart chip in it to prevent third party refilling the cartridge and re-use it. But I have not experienced the smart chip gave fault signal that the cartridge is empty when in fact it is not. But remember the cartridge that came with the new printer is just a starter cartridge and it is only 20 to 30% full. So many people fiound that they have to replace the initial cartridge very soon.
