I am planning to get a new all-in-one printer to run on Vista. My preferences are: high resolution both for printing and scanning (speed not important), low cartridge costs/consumption, long life printing (my hp 5550 deskjet prints fade in no time at all at the moment). So far I have been enticed by the Canon pixma 540 or the slightly pricier 630 and the HP 5380.
Go with HP. HP will give you double the scan resolution than anyone else. You mentioned the HP C5380. I would recommend to you the C6380. It's on sale at Best Buy this week for $159 ($10 more than the C5380's regular price). Normally, it costs $199. The C6380 is wireless, does the best photos I've seen on an inkjet printer, and has a 4800x9600 scan resolution (2400x2400 is normal). I've made copies of photos with this printer that looked better than the originals. Also, ink is inexpensive. Fade resistance is rated at 100 years. The C5380 is a decent printer too, but I think you'll be blown away by the HP C6380 and its features. I was.
