I have a 4 year-old Canon i450 printer. It generally works fine. last week the printer went out of ink so i went to get ink refill since it's cheaper.It couldn't print anything afterwards.

Sounds like it's the printer head fault. You can buy the part (printer head) from Canon (not the computer shops), and replace it.
