I have a Brother LC-51 MFC All-in-One printer, and it won't let me scan because it is out of ink. Is there any trick that I can do to fool the printer into thinking it has ink so I can scan or fax?

I have a Brother LC-51 MFC All-in-One printer, and it won't let me scan because it is out of ink. Is there any trick that I can do to fool the printer into thinking it has ink so I can scan or fax?
Unfortunately there is not. The ink acts as an on/off switch for the entire printer, when one is empty the entire printer shuts down. Inconvenient, however it forces you to unnecessarily buy more ink.
