I have a Brother MFC 4-in-1 printer. Every time a color ink cartridge runs out, it will not even let me print in black and white. Is there any way around this? I just need to print in black and white, but it won't let me because the yellow is out.
The color cartridges are needed to keep a consistent prime on the print head. This means that there is always a small amount of ink present in the print head of the cartridge. The residual ink left in the print head acts as a coolant. Without that ink even for monochrome printing, you will warp and completely destroy the print head. With many Brother printer models, a small amount of color ink is also used to darken and sharpen the black. You need to replace that yellow in order to print.
