I have a Brother MFC-5840CN printer. It used to work fine with printing color, but suddenly it just didn't work anymore even though my cartridges were well full of ink. I just replaced all of the cartridges and they still don't work!
You need to do a deep cleaning, the self clean upon install isn't usually nought to keep the printer printing well. Brother print head normally crap out after about 3 years which is about the age of your printer. Try a series of print head cleanings, see if you can get it going, if not it may be time for a new printer.
