I have an Epson C42UX printer which I am having problems with, the quality of my printouts are poor including horizontal lines appearing when I print in economy. I haven't used the printer in ages and have recently got a new black cartridge for it. I already have a color cartridge and both are third-party. I have used third-party cartridges before without problems. I have ran the nozzle check and head cleaning programs several times with varying results: Sometimes the black hardly prints out, and sometimes it does. This is the same for the rest of the colors.

Try taking the cartridges out and cleaning the print head. Use q-tips and rubbing alcohol and clean each cone until the q-tips come out relatively clean. Then replace the carts and try another cleaning cycle.
