I have an Epson Stylus dx4850 and I don't use it much and its pretty much turned off all the time.When I print, it uses up a lot more ink than usual.
Unfortunately, when a printer is only used infrequently, ink in the nozzles starts to dry up. The noise you hear at first is the initial head clean process but, because of lack of use, the print head needs extra cleaning. Not much you can do apart from using it more often!
