I have bought Brother MFC-240 about half year ago and in my printing almost didn't use Yellow and Magenta colors. Recently my printer reports that these colors are almost depleted. From time to time, printer works by himself even when it doesn't work, but plugged into power source. It sounds like it cleans itself automatically. Maybe this has something to do with why colors were depleted so fast?
Brother inkjet printers are known to run automatic cleaning cycles. While this keeps the head clean, it can be overbearing. I had a friend who told me his was running 4-5 times a day, until he unplugged it for when he didn't need it. And as I am sure you know, cleaning cycles use a little bit of ink each time. So besides a phantom printer using your machine, blame the cleaning cycles.
