I have recently bought a Brother MFC-465CN multi-purpose printer. I have barely printed 40 pages (most in B&W) and the printer already asked me to replace 2 of the colour cartridges. I tried to set it to print in black only, but it's not allowed. All cartridges must not be empty for the machine to print. Strangely, I took the indicated cartridges out and found that they were not empty. I want to know if there is a work-around to this problem, besides buying new cartridges.
I think this is the issue: The first time you install the ink cartridges the machine will use extra ink to fill the ink delivery tubes. This is a one-time process that enables high quality printing. Afterward, replacement ink cartridges will print the specified number of pages. Also, there will always be some amount of ink left in an 'empty' ink cartridge. It is necessary to leave a small amount of ink in the ink cartridge to prevent air from drying out and damaging the print head assembly.
