I tried to use two different continuous ink systems with my Epson RX685, but am getting the message 'cartridges not recognised, have tried reset several times same problem, does anyone know; A. how do I solve it? B. If I tried using compatible cartridges instead, will they work? c. if I changed printer to Epson Rx585, will I have the same problems?

Sure sounds like a chip issue. Perhaps the CIS that you have are older, before the Epson litigation happened. (Newer) compatibles should definitely work with that model. If the CIS isn't working with the 685 than I highly doubt it will work with the 585.
