My Brother HL-2040 has started putting a speckling of black (light gray) over the white areas of whatever I'm printing. Has the cartridge gone bad?
It could be a cartridge problem. One thing to do is stop the printer halfway through the print cycle and pull the cartridge and look at the image on the drum. Do not touch the drum. If there are speckles on the drum, it is probably a bad cartridge. If the image is clear, it is possible that your fuser is bad or that your printer has had a toner leak.
