My Brother MFC-420CN printer won't do anything just because I'm out of magenta ink.
A lot of printer manufacturers have modified their printers in such a way that once an ink well or cartridge is empty, it stops printing at all. They did this so that people who print mostly in black and white, and only occasionally with color will not let the color cartridge sit empty for long periods of time, causing it to stop printing color at all even when a new cartridge is installed. The best course of action is to replace your red ink. You can also try to see if you set your printer to print only B&W (Start | Control Panel | Printers | Right mouse click on the printer. Click on Properties | Advance Settings | Quality Tab) to see if it works.
