My Brother MFC printer refuses to read the cartridges. They're somewhat near-empty, although the cartridges DO have enough ink for several pages, so it shouldn't be complaining. The cartridges were removed and cleaned off before being reinserted back into the way they had been, yet there's still no change. I read about this problem on a product review on another website, yet it offered no solution.
If it's error 41, you're unfortunately dead out of luck and need to either contact brother or buy a new printer. if it's telling you they are empty, you can only reset that by telling the printer they are not empty, and then of course the printer will think these are full carts and will continue printing until it decides they are empty again (which can run the risk of burning up the print head carriage, and that is an expensive fix). If the carts are newer (say, the lc 41s or 51), there is actually a piece of plastic inside that lowers with the ink level. if you have these, you either need to refill or get new carts, or else the printer will keep tracking the plastic level gauge, and if your carts are close to empty, the gauge is at the bottom.
