Two days ago, I took out the empty cartridge from the printer, went out and brought a colored cartridge and put it in the printer (which, by the way is an Epson Stylus c46). However, I can't print in color without the black cartridge. Do I really need to go out and buy one?
You need black ink. There is no override. Epson print heads are a finely tuned piezoelectric print head, which means they have a little vibrating crystal in them. If there is no ink to 'cushion' the crystal the printer shuts down. That is why you need both cartridge installed with ink. If you do not, you will ruin your printer.
