Why does my HP 1012 laser printer look like its running out of toner in the middle, but not on the sides? If the toner is falling out when you shake the cartridge, either you are shaking it too hard, accidentally opening the door, or the cartridge is defective. I would advise you as the previous person stated - replace it. Defective cartridges can damage the printer and the toner will be going into the air you breath - not healthy. The proper way to shake a toner cartridge is to hold it by the ends which slide into the groves on either sider of the toner cavity. Make you do not open the door (it is held closed with a spring and opens when you place it into the printer properly.) Rock it gently end to end at about 45 degres. Rock it gently rolling action it towards you and away from you. Check the cavity where the cartridge seats. If there is any toner lying in there, clean it out.
